Bowburn Methodist Church has a membership of 47 members
with an average congregation of about 20 worshipping every
Sunday morning. The congregation, of all ages, is drawn mainly
from Bowburn and the two surrounding villages of Shincliffe
and High Shincliffe.
The present building was built in 1910, following the amalgamation of
the “Tin Chapel”- a Primitive Methodist church
which was on the top of the hill in Bowburn; and the “Central”
Methodist church at the bottom of the hill; and initially
served the spiritual needs of a mining community.
A traditional Methodist chapel, the congregation welcomes newcomers
with warmth and fellowship; to worship God together; and we
try to bear witness to God through service in the local community.
Sunday 10.45 a.m.
Women’s Fellowship
Women from the church and the wider community meet to hear
various speakers, and for fellowship together . They meet
the 1st two Wednesdays of the month in the church hall at 2.00 p.m.
Kids Club
During term times, a thriving group for youngsters between
the ages of 5 and 9 meet each Tuesday at 5.30 p.m. in the
church hall, for a fun-filled programme.
At present there is a waiting list for children wishing to join the Kids Club.
The “Drop In”
During term times, the mothers and carers of pre-school children
of the local community, meet on Thursdays from 9.00 am to
11.30 a.m.. in the church hall. Refreshments, games and entertainment
for the children, are provided.
There is also always a “quiet room” and always
someone present, for those perhaps recently bereaved, who
wish to chat over coffee to a sympathetic ear.
