North Road Methodist Church has 100 members with an average congregation
of about 70 of all ages worshipping each Sunday morning. A gathered congregation,
people come from various parts of Durham to worship at North Road and all
are made very welcome. The church is In the centre of University accommodation
and we take our outreach to students seriously.
Although rightly proud of its history, North Road sees itself as a church
committed to telling people of the good news of Jesus to people in the 21st
Century. We offer a wide variety of worship on Sundays and in the week.
As a gathered community, we acknowledge the importance of fellowship with
one another ~ to share one anothers joys and sorrows. We constantly look
at our programme to ensure we are meeting the needs of those who attend
and see if we can offer anything else to the people of Durham.
We believe that God has something to offer all people and want to share
that good news with others. North Road has a long tradition of "sound"
theology, standing as it does close to the University ~ however, we do not
think this should mean "boring".
Every two years the church considers its use of money and talents. In
2006 our latest stewardship campaign began 'Why are you doing that' encouraging
all to think about what we do in and out of church. We are supporting WaterAid
and the building project 'Access for All' which will includes the installation
of a lift..
The
former Caretakers Cottage at the rear of the church is now the HQ for Durham Christian Partnership.
We are proud of our links with other local churches.

North Road Methodist Church was formed in 1961 following the uniting of
two congregations at Jubilee and Bethel Methodist Churches, both of which
worshipped on North Road. The idea was to build a new church; however the
Bethel building was made a grade 2 listed building and so the church found
it difficult to relocate and had to look into modernising the interior.
It seems difficult for us to believe today, but the church was built before
the railway viaduct that is located close by. The initial cost of building
in 1853 was £2000 and the opening service in 1854 had a worshipping
congregation of 900 people. (Although it is difficult to see where they
sat!) North Road has over the years been part of many circuits, and now
proudly belongs to the Durham and Deerness Valley Circuit.
