The church was built in 1851 as the Ebenezer Primitive
Methodist Church and was enlarged in 1901 to its present size.
In 1968 the congregation amalgamated with that of the nearby
Bethel Wesleyan Methodist Church and since that date the present
church has been known as Sherburn Hill Methodist Church.
Everyone
who visits our church is guaranteed a friendly welcome!
Although small in number, everyone here feels part of a family
in which everyone is interested and cares for each other,
for members of the community, and for all visitors to the
church. The congregation is not confined to living in the
Sherburn Hill area. Several come from the nearby villages
of Sherburn, Shadforth, Belmont and even Durham City. This
allows God's influence to be shown in a greater area.
Members of the congregation regularly support functions arranged
by our friends from the local Salvation Army, Anglican,
Roman Catholic and other Methodist churches.
Prayers are regularly said at church services, and also privately,
for anyone who is in need.
As a church we try to be aware of people's needs and problems and seek to
support them. We look critically at ourselves in order to
keep our vision and its direction fresh in our minds.
If you enjoy a good 'hymn sing', there are few small churches
in this area to beat the music made in praise to God within
the four walls of our church.
Sunday
Worship is held at 9.45am and lasts for approximately
one hour.
On the first Tuesday of each month between February and May and between September and December, the ladies of the church meet in the Vestry for their Women's Circle. This meeting commences at 2.15pm and lasts for about one hour after which tea and biscuits are served. Whilst each meeting incorporates a time of devotion, invited speakers come along to talk on a wide variety of subjects.
The
church is situated on the south side of Front Street (the
main street), B1283 road Sherburn Hill, at the top of the
hill.
