"We
must not seek the child Jesus in the pretty figures of our
Christmas cribs. We must seek him among the undernourished
children who have gone to bed tonight without eating, among
the poor newsboys who will sleep covered with newspapers in
doorways." Oscar Romero
Many
of the people who have changed society and the world have
been Christians whose motivation was a vision from God
William
Wilberforce (abolition of the slave trade), Dr Barnardo, Thomas
Bowman Stephenson (founder of National Children's Homes) and
the founders of the Jubilee 2000 campaign for the cancellation
of unpayable 3rd world debt were all driven by their passion
for justice for all springing from their Christian faith and
belief in a just and loving God who is equally interested
in the lives of all.
Desmond
Tutu said, "I am puzzled about which Bible people are
reading when they say that religion and politics don't mix".
If
we're going to 'walk the talk' and truly live our lives as
Christians, we need to be involved in making a difference
in our world. Even small things make a difference - supporting
fair-trade, buying a copy of the Big Issue, signing a petition
or writing to your MP. See the links page for a list of organisations
which can help in this.
